Lesson Prohibitions of Ihram

When entering into the state of ihram, the pilgrim or person doing Umrah should avoid several prohibitions. This is what you will learn about in this lesson.

  • Awareness of the prohibitions of ihram.
  • Awareness of the rulings associated with falling into any of these prohibitions.

The Prohibitions of Ihram

It is what the muhrim (person in ihram) is forbidden from in Hajj or 'Umrah.

The Prohibitions of Ihram Are Upon Three Categories

١
A category that is prohibited on males and females
٢
A category that is prohibited on males only
٣
A category that is prohibited on females only

Among the Prohibitions of Ihram Are on Males and Females

١
Shaving the hair or trimming it. Likewise, cutting the nails.
٢
Using fragrances and perfume, whether on their garment or body.
٣
Intercourse and a man (sexually) approaching his wife. Likewise, touching and fondling if it is for lust.
٤
Contracting marriage, whether the muhrim be a man or woman.
٥
The muhrim is forbidden from hunting so hunting wild animals and birds is not allowed for them.

Among the Prohibitions on Men

١
Wearing sewn-up clothing, and it is that which spells out the limbs of the body such that each limb has that which covers it and separates it, like a shirt, thowb, breeches, pants and the like.
٢
Covering the head with something that attaches. As for that which covers the head from the ceilings of buildings, vehicles, and canopies, then there is no problem with that.

Among the Prohibitions of Ihram on Women

١
The niqab (face veil) and covering the face. What is legislated is that she expose her face, unless if men who are not mahrams (those prohibited permanently prohibited from marrying her for permissible reasons like certain relatives and in-laws) pass by her, then she can veil her face and it does not harm her if this covering touches her face.
٢
Wearing gloves

And whomever does something from these prohibitions forgetfully, ignorantly, or under coercion, then there is nothing upon them, for the saying of Allah Exalted ﴾And there is no sin upon you for that in which you have erred with but [only for] what your hearts intended﴿ [Al-Ahzab: 5]. However, if they remember or come to know, it becomes obligatory upon them to abandon the prohibition immediately.

Whomever Does Something from the Prohibitions (of Ihram) Due to an Excuse that Permits It, Then Upon Them Is the Fidyah and There Is No Sin Upon Them

He Exalted said ﴾And do not shave your heads until the offering has reached its destination. But whoever of you is sick or has some affliction of his head, then the due fidyah (ransom) is fasting or a donation or a sacrifice. Then when you are secure: whoever enjoys a break between the Minor Pilgrimage and the Pilgrimage, then (he must offer) whatever is feasible of offering. But whoever cannot find the means, then fasting for three days during the Pilgrimage, and seven when you have returned; that is ten in total. That is for the one whose family is not present at the Inviolable Mosque. And be mindful of Allah, and know that Allah is stern in retribution) [Al-Baqarah: 196].

Whomever Does Something from the Prohibitions (of Ihram) Intentionally Without Excuse, Then Upon Them is the Fidyah and They Are Sinful

The prohibitions of ihram are categorized with regards to the fidyah (ransom) into four categories:

١
First: that which there is no fidyah upon it, and it is contracting marriage.
٢
Second: that for which its fidyah is a camel, and it is intercourse during Hajj before the first tahallul (exit from ihram).
٣
Third: that for which its fidyah is its compensation or what substitutes it, and it is killing huntable animals.
٤
Fourth: that for which its fidyah is fasting, charity, or sacrafice (fidyah of harm), and it is shaving the head and the other prohibitions except the three previous ones.
