Lesson Major Hadath and Ghusl
The Causes that Make Ghusl Obligatory
They are the affairs that if they occured to a Muslim, he would be described as having major hadath (state of impurity) upon him and ghusl (ritual bath) would be incumbent upon him before prayer or tawaf (circling the Ka'bah).
1. Ejaculation of Semen
Ejaculation of semen pouring out with pleasure by any means and in all cases, waking or sleeping. Semen is the white, thick liquid that comes out the climax of pleasure and enjoyment.
2. Intercourse
What is meant by intercourse is a man's penis entering the vagina of a woman, even if there is no ejaculation and emission of semen. The penetration of the head of the penis is sufficient for (causing) the obligation of ghusl.
The Release of Menstrual and Postpartum Blood
Hayd (Menstrual blood): it is the natural blood that comes out of a woman monthly, and it continues for seven days, more or less depending on the differences between the nature of women. Nifas (Postpartum blood): it is the blood that comes out of a woman due to her delivery and it continues for a number of days.
It is eased for the menstruating and postpartum women during the time of the release of the blood, so prayer and fasting is relieved from them, and they make up fasting after becoming pure. They do not make up prayer.
Intercourse of Menstruating and Postpartum Women
It is not permissible for men to have intercourse with their women during menstrual and postpartum bleeding. It is permissible to derive pleasure with what is less than intercourse. And they (the women) must perform ghusl upon the blood stopping. The Exalted said: ﴾so keep away from women during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. Then when they have purified themselves, come to them from where Allāh has ordained for you﴿ [Al-Baqarah: 222] and the meaning of "Then when they have purified themselves" that is: if they perform ghusl.
It is sufficient for a Muslim to intend purification and wash all of their body with water
The most complete in ghusl is by bathing as the Prophet ﷺ bathed so if he wanted to bathe from janabah (state of impurity from sexual activity) then he would wash his hands, then wash his genital and what became dirty from janabah. Then he would perform a complete wudoo' then wash his head with water three times then wash the rest of his body.
If a Muslim performs ghusl from janabah then that is sufficient for wudoo' and they do not need to do wudoo' with ghusl. However, ghusl containing wudoo' is better as was the Sunnah (way) of the Prophet ﷺ .
