Lesson The Sunnahs of the Fitrah (natural disposition)

Allah, Mighty and Grand, predisposed the human upon a group of features of perfection that make him appear as best as he can if he acts on them. In this lesson, we will learn about the sunnahs of the fitrah and their rulings.

  • Learning the sunnahs of the fitrah
  • Learning about the rulings of the sunnahs of the fitrah

The Sunnahs of the Fitrah

They are the attributes that Allah predisposed people upon and that the Muslim becomes complete in doing them so they are upon the best features and most beautiful condition. That is that Islam has given consideration to the aspects of beauty and perfection for the Muslim such that outer and internal uprightness comes together for them.

(The Prophet) ﷺ said "The fitrah (natural disposition) is five: circumcision, shaving (pubic hair), trimming the mustache, clipping the nails, and plucking the armpits." (Al-Bukhari 5891, Muslim 257). And he ﷺ said "Ten are from fitrah: trimming the mustache, sparring the beard, cleaning the teeth with siwak (tooth stick), sniffing water, trimming the nails, washing the finger joint creases, plucking the armpits, shaving the pubic hair, washing with water (after relieving oneself)" [the narrator said]: and I forgot the tenth unless it be gargling. (Muslim 261)

Circumcision

Circumcision for the male is removing the skin of the front of the penis, and normally that is in the first days from (after) birth. It is from the sunnahs of the fitrah that are obligatory with regards to the male, and it has numerous health benefits.

Istihdad (Shaving the Pubic Hair)

It is removing the rugged hair on the pubic area by shaving it or by any other means.

Trimming the Mustache

Keeping the mustache is from the permissible affairs and it is not mustahab (rewardable). If a Muslim keeps it, then it is incumbent upon him not to make it long by extra means and to maintain it by trimming and shortening.

Growing the Beard and Sparring It

Islam encourages growing and sparring the beard and it is the hair that grows on the cheeks and chin. Growing it (is) keeping it and not shaving it, following the sunnah (way) of the Prophet ﷺ.

Siwak

What is meant is using the stick of Arak ("The Toothbrush Tree") or other than it for cleaning the teeth and it is from the mustahab matters.

Clipping the Nails

It is appropriate for the Muslim to maintain their nails by clipping so they do not become a place for dirty and uncleanly things.

Plucking the Armpit

It is appropriate for the Muslim to remove the hair of the armpit by plucking it or by any other means of removal to be keen about no bad smell coming from it.

Washing the Creases of the Finger Joints

The creases of the finger joints are the gaps and curves in the fingers, and washing them is mustahab.

Abating Water and Gargling and Sniffing

Abating water is istinjaa' and the discussion about these three has passed in the lesson on the manners of Istinjaa' and relieving oneself and the lesson on wudoo'.
