Lesson Invalidators of Fasting

There are a number of invalidators of fasting that, if happened to the fasting male or female, would ruin their fast. In this lesson, you will learn about these invalidators of fasting.

Learning about the types of invalidators of fasting.

Invalidators of Fasting

They are the matters which they are obligatory upon the fasting person to refrain from because they ruin fasting.

1. Eating and Drinking

(Allah) Exalted said (And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the night [i.e., sunset].) [Al-Baqarah: 187]

Whomever eats or drinks forgetfully then their fast is valid and there is no sin upon them, as the Prophet ﷺ said <

2. What Is in the Meaning of Eating and Drinking

١
Nourishing shots and solutions that reach the body to boost it in that which it is deficient in from salts and nutrients, then they take the place of eating and drinking so they take their rulings.
٢
Blood transfusion for the sick: because blood provides nutrition to the body so it has the ruling of food and drink.
٣
Smoking in its (different) types, for it is an invalidator of fasting because it enters the cavity of the person like food and drink.

3. Intercourse by entering the head of the penis into the vagina of a the woman, regardless if the many ejaculated semen or not.

4. A Man Ejaculating His Semen Voluntarily: By Fondling, Masturbation, or the Like

As for dreaming that occurs in sleep, then it is not an invalidator of fasting. It is permissible for a man to kiss his wife if he was able to control himself, else that is not permissible for him so that he does not invalidate his fast.

5. Intentional Vomiting

As for who vomit comes out from involuntarily, then there is nothing upon him. (The Prophet) ﷺ said <> (At-Tirmidhi 720, Abu Dawud 2380)

6. The Emission of Menstrual and Postpartum Blood

So when menstrual or postpartum blood are found in any part of the day then the woman has broken her fast. If she was menstruating then became pure after the appearance of Fajr, her fasting would not be valid for that day due to the statement of the Prophet ﷺ <> (Al-Bukhari 1951)

As for the blood that comes out from the woman due to disease, it being other than the typical menstruation, specific days of the month, and other than the postpartum blood that comes out after delivery, then that does not hinder fasting.
