  • Learning the virtue of wudoo'.
  • Learning the way of performing wudoo'.

The Virtue of Wudoo'

Wudoo' and purification are among the best deeds that raise the ranks of a Muslim, for Allah expiates by them sins and wrongs whenever the slave purifies his intention, seeking the reward from Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said «If the Muslim slave - or the believer - performs wudoo' so he washes his face, every wrongdoing he looked at with his eyes will leave his face with the water - or with the last drop - so if he washes his hands, every wrongdoing his hands siezed will leave with the water - or with the last drop of water - so if he washes his feet, every wrongdoing his feet walked will leave with the water - or with the last drop of water - until he leaves pure of sins» (Muslim 244).

How do I perform wudoo' and remove minor impurity?

Intention

If a Muslim wants to perform wudoo', then he must make the intention for it, meaning that he intend by heart and mind that by his action he removes the hadath. And intention his a condition in all actions as the Prophet ﷺ said «Actions are but by the intentions» (Al-Bukhari 1, Muslim 1907). Then he begins with wudoo' with the following order, consecutively, without a long pause between actions.

He says: Bismillah (In the name of Allah)

Washing the hands

It is rewardable that he washes his hands with water three times,

Gargling

(He then) gargles with water, meaning he puts water in his mouth and moves it internally then expels it. And it is rewardable for him to do that three times and the obligation is one time.

Sniffing water and nasally expelling

(He) sniffs water: that is he pulls water (up) his nose. Then he nasally expels: that is he pushes out the water out by means of the air coming out of the nose. It is rewardable for him to maximize it unless that causes harm to him or if he is fasting. It is rewardable to repeat that three times and the obligation is one time.

Washing the Face

He washes his face. It is from the top of the forehead from where the hair sprouts to the bottom of the chin and from ear to ear, and the ears are not included in the face. It is mustahab (rewardable) for him to do that three times, and the obligation is one time.

Washing the Hands

He washes his hands from the tips of the fingers to the elbows, and the elbow is the place where the forearm connects to the upper arm. The elbows are included in the washing. It is mustahab (rewardable) for him to begin with the right and to repeat the washing three times, and the obligation is one time.

Wiping the Head

He wipes his by wetting his hands with water then wiping on his head from the front of the head to the end of the head from what borders the neck. It is sunnah (rewardable) for him to bring back his hands wiping to the front of the head again. It is not mustahab (rewardable) for him to repeat that three times like the other limbs. Rather he does that one time.

Wiping the Ears

He wipes his ears such that after he wipes his head, he puts his index fingers into his ears and wipes the back of the ears with his thumbs.

Washing the Feet

He washes his feet with the ankles, and they are the two protruding bones on the sides of the leg where the foreleg meets the foot. He begins with the right and it is mustahab (rewardable) to repeat the washing three times and the obligation is one time. If he was wearing a sock then it is permissible for him to wipe on it with conditions.
