Lesson Spiritual Reflections on True Meaning of Journeys.

Islam does not deter a Muslim from enjoying nature and having fun, marvelling at the beauty of Allah's perfection in His creation.

  • A Muslim must link his religion with all aspects of his life.
  • He should reflect on Allah's power as manifested in His creation.

The intended meaning behind journeys is when a person goes on leisurely trips to places of natural beauty etc.

The word "Rih-lah" journey has occurred in the Quran in the following verse: (For the accustomed security of the Quraysh. Their accustomed security [in] the caravan (journey) of winter and summer.) (Quraish:1-2) The winter journey was the trade caravan they sent in the direction of Yemen. The journey of summer was when they headed to Shaam (modern-day Syria, Jordon and Palestine.)

How can we increase our iman (faith) during our journeys?

The life of a Muslim is connected to Allah the most high and His legislation in all day-to-day affairs. Going out on journeys is full of legal rulings Allah has prescribed for us due to the great benefits in this life and the next. That is achieved when a person tries to do his best towards those rulings.

A believer can change his journey into a form of worship by going to a place that will help him do acts of worship, such as Hajj and Umrah, or seeking knowledge. He can also make his intention to join the ties of kinship and make his family happy while also relaxing in a permissible way. In this way, he seeks to use that to help him upon the obedience of Allah and to stay away from what Allah has forbidden.

(Say, indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.)(An'aam:162)

A Journey is an Opportunity for Beneficial Thought and Deep Reflection.

The universe is full of Allah's signs that show His greatness, mercy and wisdom. He says: (Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.)(Aal Imran: 190) He has repeatedly ordered us to ponder with deep thought and reflection, not only for pleasure. Allah says: (Do they not look into the realm of the heavens and the earth and everything that Allah has created ..) (Al-'Araaf: 185)

In the same way, isolation can sometimes present an opportunity for someone to evaluate themselves and see what they have put forward for tomorrow, especially if they are alone with only Allah watching over them.

What should be done when you've reached your place of stay, and you stop there along your journey?

Whoever reaches his place of stay and stops there while on a journey, whether among people or otherwise, must say the legislated supplication.

I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying: «When anyone stops off at a place and then says: (I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of what He has created,) nothing would harm him until he leaves that place and continues his journey.» (Muslim, 2708)
