Lesson The Meaning of the Testimony that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah

The meaning of the second part of the testimony of faith that "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah". In this lesson, you will learn its meaning and what it entails.

  • Introduction to the meaning of the testimony that "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

The meaning of the testimony that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah

Believing his accounts, complying with his commands, avoiding his prohibitions, and worshiping Allah according to what the Prophet, peace be upon him, made lawful for us and taught us. This includes the following:

1- Believing the accounts that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of in all fields, including:

١
The matters of the unseen, the Last Day, Heaven and its bliss, Hell and its torment
٢
What will come to be from the events of the Day of Resurrection and its signs and what will happen at the end of time.
٣
Accounts of preceding nations and what happened between the prophets, peace be upon them, and their peoples.

2- Complying with his commands and prohibitions (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) which include:

١
Compliance with what he (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us with regards to worship, righteous deeds, and good manners.
٢
Avoiding the things that we are forbidden from, such as bad manners and harmful behaviors, with the belief that these prohibitions are due to a wisdom known by Allah, and for our benefit, even if the wisdom may be hidden from us sometimes.
٣
Our certainty that he does not speak from his whims, but rather it is a revelation from Allah Almighty, as the Exalted said: {He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah} (An-Nisa: 80).
٤
Our belief that whoever disobeys the command of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) is deserving of a painful punishment, as He the Exalted said: {So let those who go against His command beware of a trial or painful torment befalling upon them} (Al-Nur: 63).

3- That we do not worship Allah except in accordance with what the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) made lawful for us, and this includes a number of things that must be emphasized:

Following his example (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) is our example. And the servant draws closer to his Lord and rises in rank before his Master the more he follows the Sunnah of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and his guidance in the form of words, actions, agreement, and tacit approval. Allah the Exalted said: {Say, [O Muhammad], "If you love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive for you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."} (Ali 'Imran: 31)

Islam's sacred law is complete

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) conveyed the religion and the laws, completely and devoid of any deficiency. Therefore, it is not permissible for anyone to introduce a worship that Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not legislate for us.

Allah’s law is valid for every time and place

The rulings of religion and the laws that came in the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) are valid for every time and place. For there is no one more knowledgeable about humanity's best interest than the One who created them and brought them to existence from nothing.

In Accordance with the Sunnah

For acts of worship to be accepted, it is necessary to intend to do it sincerely for Allah Almighty and to make sure that the worship is in accordance with what the Prophet, peace be upon him, has legislated for us. Allah the Exalted said: {So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous deeds and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.} (Al Kahf: 110). And the meaning of (righteous) is: correct and in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him.

Prohibition of Innovation

Whoever innovates an act and worship that is not from the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and wants to worship Allah with it, is like the one who introduces a prayer in a way other than the lawful way. He is in contravention of his command, and he is sinful by that action and his action will be rejected. As Allah Almighty said: {So let those beware who dissent from his [i.e., the Prophet's] order, lest trial befall them or a painful punishment.} (Al Nur: 63) And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “He who innovates something in this matter of ours (i.e., Islam) that is not of it will have it rejected (by Allah)." (Bukhari 2550, Muslim 1718).

Loving the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)

And whoever adheres to belief in the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), they must ensure that Allah and His Messenger are dearer to him than everything. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “None of you believes till I am dearer to him than his father, his child, and all mankind.” (Bukhari 15, Muslim 44).
